Russell Swope
Russell Swope is a master bodyworker and somatic educator based in Ojai, California. Through 33 years of hands-on experience, he has developed a freedom-based approach to bodywork that blends therapeutic massage, breath, movement, and conscious touch. His work helps people release pain, restore trust in the body, and learn simple practices that support healing far beyond the massage table.
Russell’s work began from his own body crisis: severe scoliosis, a frozen spine, and a medical system that tried to force alignment onto a body that needed trust, listening, and release.
His first true healing experience came through Zen Shiatsu, where nothing was forced. A practitioner placed hands on his low back, followed his breath, and allowed his body to finally surrender. That moment changed everything. It taught him that healing does not always come from pressure, adjustment, or intensity. Sometimes the body needs safety, warmth, patience, and permission to let go.
That is the root of his work. Russell does not simply “fix pain.” He helps people remember what freedom can feel like in their body.
Russell has studied and practiced a wide range of therapeutic disciplines, including:
Southern Thai Massage
Zen Shiatsu
Craniosacral Therapy
Clinical/Therapeutic Deep Tissue
Integrated Structural & Restorative Bodywork
In addition to bodywork, Russell has spent decades studying yoga and internal arts such as qigong and tai chi, integrating movement practices that help clients bring what they learn on the table into their daily lives.
International & Worldwide Trainings
Russell’s work has taken him around the world. He spent many years in Thailand, deepening his practice through meditation retreats and teaching bodywork. He continued his studies in India, where he focused on meditation, inner awareness practices, and sharing his teachings with others. Russell has also taught throughout Europe, leading bodywork workshops and couples retreats, and continues to teach in California, offering ongoing classes, retreats, and immersive workshops.
As a teacher, Russell’s approach is experiential and grounded. Rather than memorizing techniques, students learn to listen — to themselves, to the body in front of them, and to the subtle intelligence that already knows how to heal.
That is the root of his work. Russell does not simply “fix pain.” He helps people remember what freedom can feel like in their body.
My philosophy is simple: when the body is met with presence, the nervous system unwinds, and healing becomes possible.
